EEOC Releases Annual Report
The EEOC just released its annual “Performance and Accountability Report” which records results in its enforcement efforts during fiscal year 2016, which ended Sept. 30.
In this year’s report the EEOC stated: “In fiscal year 2016, EEOC continued to focus efforts on those activities likely to have strategic impact in advancing equal opportunity in the workplace through implementation of its Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2012-2016, which the Office of Management and Budget authorized the Commission to extend through fiscal year 2018, and the related SEP.”
Below, I have compared major results from last year’s report with this year’s:
- Last year: 89,385 charges filed with the EEOC, and 92,641 charges resolved.
This year: 91,495 charges were filed with the EEOC, and 97,443 charges resolved.
- Last year: More than $525 million recovered for victims of discrimination.
This year: $482.1 million was recovered for victims of discrimination.
- Last year: 142 lawsuits filed by the EEOC, which included “100 individual suits and
42 suits involving multiple victims or discriminatory policies (versus discriminatory treatment), of which
16 were systemic suits.”
This year: 86 lawsuits filed by the EEOC, which included 55 individual suits and 13 suits involving
multiple victims or discriminatory policies, and 18 systemic suits.
- Last year: 268 “systemic” cases resolved before litigation and 26 such cases
resolved through litigation.
This year: 273 “systemic” cases resolved before litigation and 21 such cases resolved through litigation.
Takeaway: Once again, there’s a lot more in the report. Interesting stuff to read for those in the business: not much change from last year.
Next year? There may be some interesting new numbers.
