Free Program: "Assisting Victims Of Hate Crimes"

This is the second post about hate crimes.

I posted recently that the Association of the Bar of The City of New York has published a little handout which lists Hate Crime Hotline phone numbers to call – to any of the District Attorneys’ offices in the five NYC boroughs, or to the NY State Attorney General’s office.

The Bar Association is now sponsoring a free program for pro bono attorneys “seeking to assist victims of hate crimes or bias and to represent people arrested while peacefully protesting. Experienced attorneys and New York City officials will explain the process and what you need to know to do this kind of pro bono work.”

The free program is scheduled for December 19, 2016 at 6 pm., at the Bar Association, 42 West 44th Street, NY, NY 10036.

The City Bar’s handout listed the following:

REPORTING HATE AND BIAS CRIMES
Since the election, the City Bar has received reports of harassment and bias incidents against foreign LLM students and others. If you are a victim or witness of such acts, following are resources for help. Just remember, in an emergency always first call 911 for the police.

· The Manhattan District Attorney’s office has created a Hate Crime Hotline at 212-335-3100. Victims of hate crimes can call the hotline whether or not they have previously reported the crime to the police. The DA’s Hate Crimes Unit can offer support in the reporting of incidents to law enforcement as well as refer victims to providers of counseling and assistance programs.

· The District Attorneys of New York City’s five boroughs released a statement in which they “reaffirm our commitment to prosecute vigorously crimes that are motivated by bias and hate.”

· Gov. Cuomo’s office has announced a statewide hotline to report incidents of bias and discrimination: 1-888-392-3644. And yesterday, the Governor announced plans to set up a dedicated unit of the state police to investigate hate crimes and discrimination statewide.
